EAL (English as an Additional Language) Teacher

Share

For 2023/2024 school year

We are looking for a teacher who is well qualified in language acquisition and has plenty of experience in teaching English to students between the ages of 11-13 who have little or no English (WIDA Level 1 or 2). The students will be average to above academically (no significant learning differences), and have proven competence in their mother tongue. The students will be withdrawn from regular classes (English, Social Studies, and World Languages) for 40% of their scheduled class time and taught in small groups (6-8 students). The students will be mainstreamed for Science and Math (adjusted curriculum and assessment), as well as Arts, Technology and PE. While we are an MYP school, students in the program will not be assessed under MYP conditions for their core subjects - an alternative assessment scheme will be used for these subjects.

The maximum total number of students in the program will be approximately 15-18 students. Our Foundation English teacher will have a schedule of 75% contact time (25% preparation time), and will assess students for “Language Acquisition”, not for separate subjects. This position will involve some leadership roles (advising on our EAL Year 2 and Year 3 program), coordinating with our admissions department, testing students with the WIDA test, and advising mainstream classroom teachers on adjusting assessment for Science and Math classes.

This position will involve helping to develop our EAL program over the coming years, with the view to us accommodating students who will sit for the IB Diploma Language B English exam.

Preferred qualifications and experience:

- Master's degree preferred

- Minimum 3 years' relevant teaching experience

- Initial 2 years' contract
