Grade 6 Field Trip to the River of Life

By: Peak Sen Chua and Kathy Cole

Grade Students embarked on a field trip to explore 10 predetermined locations around the River of Life area in downtown Kuala Lumpur. The area is called the River of Life because the Gombak River and the Klang River converge there.

Using a map and the knowledge they had gained from their urban planning unit as guidance, they were tasked with photographing the locations, which included the Klang River, Merdeka Square, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Masjid Jamek, and the National Mosque.

Students solved riddles at each location and documented each landmark’s key features. This trip fostered students' spatial awareness, enhanced their understanding of urban planning, and encouraged creativity and critical thinking through a field trip and subsequent mapping activity.

Upon returning, students completed a comprehensive mapping project using their collected data. They integrated photos they took during the trip to visualize the physical characteristics of each location. Finally, they engaged in an urban planning exercise. Channeling the spirit of city planners, students created a redesigned map of downtown KL while retaining the key landmarks. They were assessed on their ability to create a functional and innovative redesign.

Ms. Kathy Cole, MYP Social Studies teacher, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed taking grade 6 downtown KL to the River of Life. It was both interesting and educational for all.”

Grade 6 students also enjoyed the trip! Grade 6 student Hay Li said, " I enjoyed going to the River of Life for a field trip there were beautiful murals and we got to learn about the history of Malaysia! I think it was enjoyable and I would recommend going!"
