From 11 - 14 November 2024, our talented MKIS Strings students embarked on a musical journey to the ISF Academy in Hong Kong for a four-day, three-night music exchange program. This exciting project began in September with auditions, and the selected students dedicated themselves to weekly practice sessions to practice. These practices, teacher Yi Chien Chew explained, “happened before school and during lunch breaks to prepare for this special event.”
The exchange blended music and culture. Students participated in an African drumming workshop and expanded their string repertoire alongside their ISF counterparts.
At the conclusion of the exchange, the M’KIS students performed a mini-concert for the ISF student community. The mini concert by M’KIS students included three Christmas songs, “Hark! The Herald Angel Sings,""It’s a Small World,” and “William Tell Overture.” Grade 7 student Annabelle performed a solo piece, “The Legend of Ashitaka,” a Joe Hisaishi composition that was featured in Princess Mononoke.
Beyond the music, M'KIS students forged new friendships, gained valuable experience in a different ensemble setting, and explored the vibrant culture of Hong Kong. They visited iconic tourist spots, savored local cuisine, and enjoyed an unforgettable day at Disneyland!
The trip was led by Ms. Yi Chien Chew, M'KIS Music Teacher, who said, "Our students returned with full hearts, cherished memories, and immense pride in their accomplishments. You represented MKIS with excellence and spirit!"
Charlotte, Grade 6 said: "I’ve practiced so hard for this music exchange in Hong Kong, but every moment was so enjoyable—it didn’t feel like work at all! I made so many amazing new friends along the way, and the whole trip was an unforgettable experience. I would absolutely love to do it all over again!"
Meanwhile, Aanya, Grade 8 said "I was really scared to participate in the music exchange at first, but Ms. Chew gave me so much encouragement and support that it felt possible. She helped us set it as a long-term goal, and with lots of rehearsing and hard work, I now feel like a true achiever doing something I love. This experience has created memories that will last forever!"
