MYP Product Design at M'KIS

“Design is not just what it looks and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs

As a part of adopting the International Baccalaureate Middle Years’ Programme (MYP) we were excited to add Product Design as an element of our expanding STEAM programming at M’KIS this year. Our MYP Product Design Technology course challenges students to apply practical and creative thinking to solve problems by designing products to meet different needs.

Over the course of their project-based learning units, students work through a design cycle that involves four major steps: (1) Inquiry and analysis of the problem; (2) Developing ideas and planning; (3) Creating a product to solve the problem; and (4) Evaluating the success of their solution. Students can build on what they learn to improve the products that they create as they move through the cycle again!

Our new Product Design Lab is a safe and well-resourced space full of hand and power tools for working with many different types of materials, from wood to modern polymers and plastics. We’re continuing to add new tools and resources to the lab, including 3-D printing and modeling tools. Students’ daring and creativity are the only limits on the innovative solutions that they can create!

Design technology continues to move our society forward and dramatically change how we live our lives every day. MYP Product Design at M’KIS gives our students the opportunity to work through the same process that modern product designers use to build the tools we use to interact with our world each and every day to bring their bold ideas to life!

101 Dalmatians @ M'KIS

From nose to tail and ear to paw, 101 Dalmations was a howling success. Every character was spot on and delivered a performance worthy of the Palm Dog Award. We are so proud of our pack of pups for putting on such a spectacular performance. Congratulations to one and all. #proudlymkis

M'KIS Student Feature - Ayman - Grade 8

Our future is in excellent hands if students like Ayman continue to take the initiative and work towards a better world for all. Ayman, now in grade 8 at M’KIS, is from Pakistan and moved with her family to Kuala Lumpur two years ago. As her first truly international school experience, Ayman’s eyes were opened to the endless possibilities that lie in front of her and feels that she has the freedom, support and ability to achieve anything she puts her mind to.

Last summer, while making bracelets with her mom at home here in Kuala Lumpur, the idea to form a mini summer school for other kids in Pakistan was sparked. Ayman got working on a Google Site, put together a Whatsapp group, designed a Google sign-up form and prepared a two-day mini summer program that was jam packed with fun arts and crafts activities. Through networking with her parents, colleagues, and friends in Pakistan, Ayman had 21 kids sign up for her program. The program was completely supported by her mom and dad who helped her with space, projectors and anything else she needed.

Taking initiative like this and actually making a success out of it is a testimony to Ayman’s tenacity and passion for people. Ayman has a dream of becoming a positive influence on people through being a motivational speaker; however, her ultimate goal is to be the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Ayman, we are proud to have you and your family as part of our M’KIS Community. Keep doing what you’re doing and we know that one day you will achieve spectacular things.

Professional Development @ M'KIS

Professional development done differently! Our last professional development session involved the entire faculty and staff coming together in various classrooms around the school. Each group experienced a series of short presentations from different teachers. The goal of these sessions was for everyone to better understand the roles these teachers play and the high level of teaching and learning that occurs at M'KIS. It was great to see all the participants really enjoying themselves as they interacted with colleagues that they would usually not get the opportunity to interact with.

M’KIS Athletes Perform Exceptionally at ISAC

At the recent International Schools' Athletics Conference (ISAC) Track and Field Championship held at Kuala Lumpur Alice Smith School (KLASS), the Mont’Kiara International School (M’KIS) athletes took home 23 medals with a combined elementary, middle and high school team of only 44 athletes.

In a highly competitive competition that consisted of Kuala Lumpur’s top international schools, M’KIS was one of the smaller teams on the day. The M’KIS athletes rose to the occasion and were a shining example of how a handful of dedicated athletes have the ability to compete at any level. Athletes from every school put forward exceptional performances throughout the day, making it a real testament to international school education here in Malaysia.

“We are exceptionally proud of each and every one of our athletes. They have worked incredibly hard over the past twelve weeks and deserve the results they achieved today. No matter where they placed, we know that they gave one-hundred percent on the day. We look forward to continuing to build a strong and competitive athletics program at M’KIS. We would also like to thank KLASS for hosting and putting on a great weekend.” - M’KIS Head Coach, Mr. Jeff Hritzuk.

The Elementary ISAC Championship took place on Saturday 23 February 2019, with the Middle and High School ISAC Championship taking place on Sunday 24 February 2019. Both days ran smoothly with a new format that was implemented this year in relation to the timing of events.

M'KIS Varsity Girls' Basketball Team Takes ISAC Silver

Go Tigers! Our M'KIS Varsity Girls' Basketball team ended their local league winning 9 games out of 10. After a hard-fought championship game against ISKL, the team took home the ISAC silver medal.

Mr. Budworth, one of the team's coaches gave a brief account of their road to the championship at ISAC:

"The first game with KLASS was tough beyond compare. They are a great team with talent a grit. One of our players, Dani, went down with an ankle injury 3 minutes into the game. The other Tigers made it happen in an overtime thriller with a last-second shot for victory by our seventh-grade hero, Olivia."

This was a great result these superstars. The coaches and the M'KIS Community are very proud of you.
