Go Tigers - ISAC Champions

The past week has been great for our M'KIS sports teams. Three of our teams have won their respective ISAC Divisions. The three teams that won are:

  • M'KIS U13 Girls Soccer team
  • M'KIS Varsity Boys Volleyball team
  • M'KIS U15 Boys Soccer team
Here is what some of the coaches had to say:

"On a blistering Saturday morning, the M'KIS Varsity Boys Soccer team was victorious in the ISAC Div2 tournament. After a hard-fought 3-1 victory against a strong and physical KLASS team, the boys watched on as the girls played their hardest game against ISKL. They then went on a goal rampage against a brave and young Brainy Academy team with a final score of 5-0. The boys then stuck around to support the girls' team and share in their victory. A great day for Tiger sport and Tiger spirit. Well done boys!" - Coach Nicholson, Varsity Boys Head Coach

"The day started with a resounding 5-1 victory followed by an unlucky loss in their second. Galvanized by securing a place in the semifinals, the Tigers roared into the final with a convincing 2-0 victory. What followed was a tense final against KLASS. After falling behind, a sublime free-kick brought M'KIS back into the game and restored their belief. Following a goalless period of extra time, M'KIS finally finished the tournament as Champions after a nail-biting penalty shootout. The girls played their hearts out, gave 110% for the cause, and encouraged each other every step of the way. A fantastic team performance that warranted their overall victory." - Coach Jenkins, U13 Girls Head Coach.

Well done to all teams. Go Tigers!

All Business in Grade 2 at M'KIS

The grade 2 “Big Sale” gives a practical insight into their current International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) unit of inquiry, ‘people create structure within a system.’ Our grade 2 students have been exposed to industry specialists and marketing professionals throughout the last few weeks in order to further their understanding of how all the elements in a business work together.

As a part of their preparation, Mr. Brews, our M’KIS Director of Marketing and Communications, shared insights into what marketing is all about. He took the students through the four P’s of marketing: Product, Price, Place and Promotion and added a fifth element, People. Students engaged in debate throughout the presentation on how they can spot a need in the market, how they can differentiate their product or service, what their pricing strategies are going to be, and how they are going to deliver their product or service.

Once the students identified a need, decided on a product or service, and developed a detailed plan, they set a meeting with Mr. Spence, our M’KIS Elementary School Principal, to pitch their ideas and request financing for their project. Students embraced this opportunity and impressed Mr. Spence so much that he had no choice but to approve the financing.

The learning continued as an industry expert and M’KIS parent, Mr. Song from Bosch, came to class to talk to the students about the company he works for and the products they sell. Mr. Song spoke about the company’s structure and all the various jobs that were available within the company. It was a real eye-opener for these young minds.

The unit will culminate in the “Big Sale”, providing students with an opportunity to implement all that they have learned. It’s wonderful to see how these students embrace these concepts and start to see how things function together as the unit progresses. It’s just one of the many things we love about the IB PYP here are M’KIS, and we are very proud of these grade 2 students.

Student Feature - Isaac, Grade 12

Responsible. Trustworthy. Sincere. Honest.

What parent wouldn’t want these words to describe their child? Add on being kind and taking initiative, and you have a clear description of the goals of the Boy Scouts of America Association.

The objective of the Boy Scouts is to take young people and shape them into better citizens for society.

The mission of the Boy Scouts is to equip young men and women to live ethically and morally. This is something that Isaac, a senior at M’KIS, has done his best to live out: “The objective of the Boy Scouts is to take young people and shape them into better citizens for society.” Isaac explained that while this association teaches the importance of basic skills, their primary goal is to instill in them characteristics which help build the person they become.

Ever since first joining as a cub scout in grade 2, Isaac grew up watching boys turn into men as they took on their role as boy scouts. He had a deep respect for them and strived to be like them one day. His father was also a boy scout as a young boy and exemplified what it meant to live that out. These role models motivated Isaac to continue in boy scouts and helped him achieve the highest honor of the Boy Scouts Association. Isaac was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, which is a milestone that only four percent of Scouts have been awarded since the association’s founding in 1911.

It signifies that you are a role model to others

The Eagle Scout ranking comes from extensive hours of leadership, earning merit badges, and participating in various services projects and conferences. While Isaac is humbled to have received this honor, he also is aware of the responsibility that comes along with it: “It signifies that you are a role model to others.”

Isaac hopes to be able to support future boy scouts to achieve their goals and possibly the Eagle Scout rank, just like the role models and leaders in his life did for him. “It’s not something I could have done on my own,” he explains as he describes the struggle of balancing school and achieving the Eagle Scout ranking. As a soon-to-be graduate of M’KIS, Isaac will be attending Iowa State University and will be studying electrical engineering in the fall. “It’s bittersweet, but I’m prepared to go onto this next stage of life.” The Eagle Scout rank is an excellent way to close this chapter of his life and begin a new one at university. Congratulations Isaac!

M'KIS Student Feature - Aaryan

M'KIS Student Feature! From the early age of 5, Aaryan has been growing in his love and skill for the game of chess. After first being introduced to the game by his father, Aaryan became interested in the strategy and technique involved. While attending an international school in Angola, he was first motivated by receiving best under 7 at a chess tournament when he was 6 years old. From then on, he was determined to refine his abilities and grow his love for the game. His most recent achievement was in a chess tournament for under 12 with players from over 20 international schools, where he placed 6th out of 60 students. His best performance overall was at KL Gateway Mall where he achieved 2nd place.

Nowadays, when he’s not competing in tournaments, Aaryan is practicing either online or with one of his two chess instructors. One of his favorite games to play is the fastest game Blitz and Bullets, which is where the match can last anywhere in between 1-10 minutes. One day he hopes to reach his goal of achieving the Grandmaster Title in chess, which is the highest title a chess player can receive. With an air of certainty, Aaryan is confident in attaining his goal.

On top of his love for chess, Aaryan enjoys playing cricket and looks forward to supporting his favorite professional cricket team, Australia, in the World Cup this month. The M’KIS community wishes you good luck Aaryan in your future tournaments, we are so excited for you in your achievements and are eager to see you continue to thrive!
