Grandpa Simpson: One way to get rid of them is to tell 'em stories that dont go anywhere. Like the time we went over to shelbyville during the war, I wore an onion on my belt....which was the style at the time...you couldnt get those white ones, you could only get those big yellow ones.....now where was I.....oh yeah, the important thing was I was wearing an onion on my nelt, which was the style at the time, you couldnt get those... The Tiger's Eye Front Page

Everyone is a Winner

By: Adam
January 19

On Friday the 13th, the Elementary Track and Field Carnival took place. The events that happened were, 100 meter sprints, 400 meter sprints, high jump, long jump, and shot put. The track events were on the lower field, while the field events were on the upper field. The carnival was organized by Mr. Minasian, Mr. Hastings, Mr. Hill, and Mr. Daley.

It is good in many ways that M'KIS have these types of events, for example all of the students come for half the day, and have a good exercise, and students have a chance to experience new sports. Everyone also has fun, and most of all everyone goes home with an award for participation, while the winners go home with ribbons.

Fortunately, the carnival went according to plan for the for the fourth year in a row. The Tiger's Eye hopes all the students had fun  and congratulates all the students for trying their best.

MKIS Goes Green!

The Global Citizenship Class is trying to cut down on the use of plastic water bottles in the school. This project helps the students and teachers be aware of the problems that face our world in the future.

I interviewed Sally, a student in the Global Citizenship class, and she said that the purpose of the project is to limit the use of plasticcwater bottle use. That is also why they did a survey before christmas break with students tasting the water from the bottle and the water from the water fountains to see which one they liked better. They also want to get the canteen to stop selling plastic water bottles. By reducing the amount of plastic water bottles, we are cutting down the CO2 emission. Sally also had said that the world is dieing because of all the climate changes due to all the plastic that we dont really need to have is being burned. It is also due to all the plastic that is being made for our use.

Lets all help our enviroment and our school by cutting down on plastic.

Are you ready for Exams?

By: Landon
January 11

High school students will start their exams this Friday. I have researched some of the most effective ways to study for tests in order to provide a helpful article to all students taking exams..

First, instead of waiting till you're at home, study in class by taking notes on what the teacher is telling you. Note-taking can really help you remember something you read or were taught. An effective way to take notes can be to just write down the most important thing your teacher says but keep out the things you already know. Keep your notes organized and be sure that you will be able to read and review them later on by keeping your handwriting neat. Once you get home, take time to look over everything that you wrote, you can re-write some of them to help you remember better. If you don't understand something make sure to ask your teacher the next day.

Another way to study is by managing your time well. Think how much time you need to study for each subject. For example, if you have one test that you are very good at that subject you might not need too spend as much time studying as you would on a subject that you hardly know anything about. You must consider how much time you need to spend studying at home, and how much time it will take you to finish the work. Most people tend to only be able to study for about forty-five minutes before their brain isn't completely focused on the work. Allow yourself a small break between studying but make sure you get back to work after about twenty minutes.

Studying in a group can be a great way to study. You will be able to work with friends to help each other figure out problems with your mixed knowledge. You can make sure that all of you know the subject and that your notes are correct. Also you will be able to brainstorm different ideas to remember different concepts.

The best way that you can study is by figuring out which type of studying works for you. Test out all the different type of studying that you know and pick one that suits you best. You will be able to be comfortable with your studies and the result can end in a great grade on the exam.

Good luck high school students on your exams!

One of the Best Inventions of 2011

By:Josh
January 9

Have you ever been stuck in traffic for a very long time? Well China has a way to make traffic much better, it is called the straddling bus. This is a bus that does not use tracks or is on the highway for it to travel. It is on fence-like stilts that sit above the highway so it goes above the highway so all the ordinary cars can travel underneath. This bus also helps prevent a lot less pollution because it uses solar power and municipal electricity. In the picture to the left is the design of the bu and how it will go over traffic so cars can get by.

The straddling bus would replace 40 conventional buses and that would save about 860 tons of fuel that 40 conventional buses consume annually. The bus is 18 ft tall and 25 feet wide. It can hold 1,200 people and this could reduce the traffic jams on the main routes by 20 - 30%. The bus goes on an average of about 25 MPH. The creators of the straddling bus are starting in China but later they will try to make it to other cities. The main reason for the straddling bus is to reduce the traffic in major cities, and help the earth more green instead of the conventional buses that cause a lot of pollution.

We all hate being stuck in traffic so I believe this is a very good idea to help reduce traffic jams. This bus could work great in KL as well.  Some students commute to school in about 15 minutes without traffic, but with traffic it takes up to 45 minutes to 1 hour. If there is the straddling bus it will always take 15 minutes so it would make it much easier and faster to get places.

On the 6th of December get ready to be amazed by M'KIS dancers. The dance show will include all the middle and high school dance team members.  There is also an ASA dance team that has been put together to provide students the opportunity to dance and be in the show even if you did not get in the dance elective.

This year the dance show is called Dance Fanatics. According to Ms.Leong, "the reason behind the name is that all the dancers that are in the show are passionate and fanatic about dance," so that's why she decided to call it Dance Fanatics. It will be starting at 7pm and it will end at 9pm. All the dancers and teachers involved in this have worked very hard to make this a spectacular show. Rehearsals have been scheduled on the weekends, holidays and during lunch and after school so that all the dancers will be perfect on the stage. The dance show will include jazz dances which include street jazz and hip hop jazz,  some trailblazers to songs from Shakira, Muse, Sam Sparro and many more. Rumble In The Jungle

By: Josh
November 14,2011

The Rumble In the Jungle was a basketball game between students and teachers to raise money for the Gin Greene Campus Project. It was a very close game which made it a very fun game to watch. The boys played the first half then the girls played the third quarter, and the boys finished off the fourth quarter.

The first quarter the teachers were winning, but by only one or two points. The game was a very back and forth game. After the first half the teachers were up. In the third quarter the female teachers played the girl's team.  The students were able to make back much of their loss and brought the game close again.

The varsity boys really wanted to win so they came back into the 4th quarter playing their hardest. With only 30 seconds left the students got the ball and the scored to take the lead. The teachers had one last chance to take the lead and the students played great De-fence to not allow the teachers to score. The students won 50-51 and the students went wild jumping all over each other.

The event was for a good cause and the entire gym was sold out. I personally think the 10RM ticket was well worth it because of the great game that the students played!

MKIS Works to Help Cambodia

By:Landon
Nov 2

Project Cambodia is a group at MKIS that aims to raise awareness for street children in Cambodia. Project Cambodia helps raise money for the Street Children Assistance Development Program or SCADP. SCADP provides education opportunities for children and teens who would never have a chance for an education.

Project Cambodia was founded by Miss Lehar and Ms. Menton in 2005. Every year MKIS has a field trip that sends 11th and 12th graders to Cambodia. Students helped raise money for the event by bake sales and also the Halloween dance held last Friday. Students have also spent their time making clothes for Cambodian kids at sewing classes held by volunteer parents after school.

Money raised at these events can pay for kids in Cambodia to attend school. School supplies such as projectors and white boards are also bought with the money raised by MKIS. The cost of a teen to attend high school for a year is just 150 Rm. We should all help to raise even more money next year.

Ms. Menton took a trip to Cambodia in early October because she was nominated by SCADP to receive a gold medal at the Royal Academy of Cambodia. The minister His Excellency Dr. Sam Heng. On Miss Menton's trip she visited small flooded villages, where she told me children were working in the rice feilds as farm laborers. These children will attend school classes held by SCADP.

The Death of Steve Jobs

By: Aadit
October 13 2011

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, a great visionary and pioneer of the computer industry died. Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, has died of respiratory arrest after battling pancreatic cancer for years.

Jobs was buried on Friday and according to his death certificate that was just released 3 days ago, he had a metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor for about seven years. Two months ago, he went on medical leave and handed over the job of the CEO of Apple to Tim Cook, who used to be the chief executive office of Apple until August 24. Tim Cook was especially handpicked by Jobs. Jobs' family has replied that they were with him when he died peacefully at his home.

There have been many tributes to Jobs since his death. An apple with a bite taken into it, representing the logo of Apple has been all over the internet. Other tributes were to run a candle app on their iPhone or iPad, or open up Apple's tribute site on their iDevices. Some people simply dropped flowers at the doorstep of Apple stores and Apple HQ. There have been many tributes from companies too, like Samsung delayed its latest smartphone as a tribute to Jobs, since Apple and Samsung are business partners because Apple sells components to Samsung. Even Bill Gates has expressed his condolences to Apple.

Mr. Gates' full message:

"I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Job's death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work. Steve and I met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half of our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, and the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."

Madeleine Children's Fund

By:Priyanka
Sept 23rd

MKIS is once again honoring the Madeleine Children's Fund. This organization helps kids with cancer and their families deal with such a terrible disease. Mothers from MKIS have volunteered to help out in this organization. This fund was started in honor of a young girl called Madeleine who died after a long, courageous fight against cancer. Madeleine died when she was six years old and she is always going to be missed by all her loved ones. Madeleine's parents started this organization to help families who are going through the same problem. They support the pediatric cancer wards in the hospital around Malaysia by providing them funds for some of the medical needs such as to purchase medical equipment. They also work with the National Cancer Society Malaysia and they support each other during National Cancer Week.

In MKIS, the teachers and students honor this week in a different way. We hold a lap-a-thon for the middle/high school kids and a skip-a-thon for the elementary school. In the lap-a-thon, students will get a rubber band for each lap they do and the students get people to sponsor them to raise money for the organization. There is also a free dress day planned on that day where everyone should dress in yellow. On this day, donations are also being collected for the MCF and the money goes to help all the hospitals with buying all the medication needed for the cancer patients.

Madeleine Children's Fund is a wonderful organizaton and lets hope we raise alot of money for them this year.

Save the Tigers this Friday!

By:Priyanka
Sept 19th

On Friday, September 23rd MKIS is having Tigers Day as one of the themes during spirit week. Activities have been organized to help increase awareness and promote the protection of the Malayan tiger.

The activities planned include hand stamping and Touch Up tiger painting for the elementary kids and the middle/high schoolers are wearing orange and black. Everyone is also encouraged to donate money to support this cause and the money will be collected during homeroom. The money raised will go to help WWF Malaysia with their ongoing conservation projects.

The "Tiger Team" is an ASA run by Mrs.Morris that focuses on this issue. The point of this ASA is to help raise student's awareness of the current plight of tigers around the world. They will help raise funds for The WWF Malalsia to help the tigers. Ms.Morris has provided me with the following information about the Malaysian tiger and Tiger's Day.

Tigers day is to raise the awareness level of the students to the current diffuculty of tigers around the world and specifically surrounding the Malaysian tigers. There are a lot of threats facing the tigers such as loss of their habitat, loss of prey and because of these two things, the tigers are coming into conflict with humans which leads to people killing the tigers. Now that everyone is aware of this issue, it is illegal to kill tigers around the world and to sell their part. The WWF Malaysia is strongly commitment to preserve the Malaysian tiger. They have ongoing programs that supports this endangered species.

Do You Have Enough School Spirit?

By: Wing Thai
August 29

During the week of September 19th-23rd MKIS will have its annual Spirit Week! Students and teachers are excited for Spirit Week, because it is a fun and crazy week were everyone can have their own style. Spirit Week is going to be organized by the student council. Spirit week is mainly about getting to have fun and be creative and showing your school spirit!

After interviewing 7th grade student council member Clara, I know that they are planning to have new themes in spirit week, but they did keep some old themes too like Pajama Day. Student council wants this week to be fun for every student and teacher and maybe even better than the past year.

The days that they are planing so far  are going to be Tiger Day and Pajama Day.  Student council has also been thinking about Colorful Day or Neon Day. Student council haven't started talking about the Spirit Stick yet, so we have to wait to see what they come up with.  A 7th Grader, Claire is excited for spirit week because she can wear her own clothes and she said finding the the spirit stick is so much fun.

Finally! New Food!

By:Priyanka
August 19th

After years of students having to pay insane amounts of money for food that was not even that good, MKIS finally has a new caterer. Connie's Catering  has just moved into MKIS after working at ISKL and has already been liked by many teachers and students.

Looking back at past lunch times, many teachers and students had opted to bring their lunches from home but now almost 80% of us are buying our food. Connie's has been in the catering business for 42 years now. Connie herself works here as a chef and she said found many differences between ISKL and MKIS but she did not state any as she said there was too much.

I had asked Ms. Kurth to give us her opinion on what she thinks of the new caterers and she said that she is happy with the new variety of fruits and vegetables and she is glad with the new, cheaper prices. But one thing she misses is the "make-your-own" salad bar we used to have. Parents also seem glad with the new caterers as now they don't have to fill their kids pockets with money in order to buy food for a week.

As I went around asking some of the students, a lot of them are happy with the new caterers as they have a wider variety and they are assured that there will always be food for them. When I asked three 7th grade students, Ella N., Tori, and Marisa, they all agreed that it had been time for a change in the MKIS canteen and are very pleased with the food that we have now.

We hope Connie's Catering stays successful in their business as the years go by and that everyone enjoys their food as much as we do.

Malaysian Studies Trips

By:Priyanka
Sept 5th

The time has come once again for middle school students and teachers to go on some wonderful and exciting trips around Malaysia. Each grade is going to be heading to different states in Malaysia. The 6th graders are going to Melaka, the 7th graders are going to Sibu Island, Johor Bahru  and the 8th graders are going to Taman Negara. For the 7th graders, the school is trying a new area as the students last year went to Genting Highlands. The trip leaders for each grade are Mr.Cook for 6th grade, Ms. Kurth for 7th grade and Mr.Notaras for 8th Grade. These trips are going to be on the 28th of September till the 30th of September.

Students are expected to come early on the 28th as the teachers want to stay on schedule and arrive to the different places on time. According to Mr.Cook, the trips will be tiring but still very fun. This year, the trips involve a lot of fun activities such as rafting, snorkeling, rock climbing, a lot of sight seeing and learning about the Malaysian Culture. Each trip also involves some charity work such as cleaning the beach or helping people in need. I had asked Mr. Fourmond for his opinion about the Mlayasian Studies Trips and why he thinks it is important for students to take part in them as he is in charge of all trips. He says that these trips will teach students a lot about the different cultures and they will also go on different adventures. He also says that the trip areas are chosen for each grade carefully as they want to make sure that when we graduate, we would have all gone to every state in Malaysia. In these trips students will also learn to work with one another and they might even make new friends.

Everyone seems very excited for the trips and lets hope that everything goes well and we have some of the best trips this year.
