Student Support Services Philosophy
At Mont’Kiara International School, we respect each student as a unique human being, each possessing individual learning needs. Our faculty and staff are committed to a service delivery model that involves close collaboration with parents and other stakeholders. Within the limits of available resources and within the parameters of the programs established at Mont’Kiara International School, we will attempt to meet the individual learning needs of each student.
Given the limitation of resources and programs, Mont’Kiara International School does not presume to be able to meet every need. We will strive, however, to create a learning environment that will foster cultural understanding, personal safety, emotional well-being and active engagement in an academic program that will promote growth for each of our students.
Counseling and Guidance Programs
Four counselors support students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. All counselors provide responsive services, individual planning, and systems support to their respective age groups. Responsive services and implementation strategies may include individual/small group counseling, consultation, outside referrals, crisis counseling, crisis/safety plans and school response teams, or academic probation counseling.
Individual planning is a key support area for middle and high students as these counselors help students select their courses for the following school year. As course changes made after the master schedule has been developed are difficult to accommodate, it is essential that students confer with the counselors to make appropriate selections.
At the elementary and middle school levels, a Guidance Curriculum provides guidance content in a systematic manner through scheduled instructional periods. At the high school level, college counseling becomes a priority, and thus the high school counselor advises students and parents about college preparatory standardized tests, advising students about various universities around the world, and assisting with the college application process.
English Language Learner (ELL) Services
The ELL program provides support to students with limited English proficiency. The purpose of this program is to support students as they develop the English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills needed to achieve success in all content areas. All ELL students will receive direct instructional support from one of the ELL instructors. Progress toward fluency will be reported in writing for each standard grading period.
In order to ensure optimum-learning opportunities for all of our M’KIS students, no more than 25% of each grade level should be specified as requiring direct ELL services. Non-speaking ELL candidates will be accepted into grades K-4 only. Limited proficiency students will be accepted into grade 5. In grades 6-12, a student must be able to read and write in English in order to cope with course expectations; therefore, although ELL students are accepted for middle and high school grade levels, a higher functional level is essential for admission.
Learning Support
From time to time, some children may be in need of some limited form of learning support beyond that which is provided in the regular classroom setting. When a need for learning support is determined, children are supported under the auspices of out Learning Support Program, such program encompassing Grades K-12. This support can take the form of diagnostic academic assessment and/or consultation, regular instructional periods or monitoring support. For students identified via educational and/or medical evaluation as requiring learning supports on an ongoing basis, and where space permits in the Learning Support Program, a Student Support Plan will be developed. Where a Student Support Plan is developed, such plan will be supervised by one of four (4) Learning Support Specialist Teachers.
Please be advised that M'KIS does not provide modified curricular programs.
At the elementary level only, Learning Assistance teachers are also able to provide short-term support for small groups of students within a grade level when their case loads permit. These students will be selected by the homeroom teachers according to specific assessment data. The short-term groups may provide additional remedial or enrichment activities depending on the selected area of focus.
