Middle School Counselor (Grades 6-9)

Reports To: Middle/High School Principal
Primary Functions:
- Provide leadership and guidance to support the social, emotional, and academic growth of middle school students.
- Develop and implement programs that promote student well-being, aligning with Mont’Kiara International School’s IB philosophy and values.
- Collaborate with faculty, parents, and administration to ensure a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Guidance Curriculum Development and Delivery
1. Design and conduct age-appropriate guidance lessons for grades 6-9, integrating the IB Learner Profile attributes.
2. Create and maintain curriculum maps for counseling programs that align with the school’s mission and the IB framework.
3. Foster student development through lessons focused on social-emotional learning, responsible decision-making, and self-management.
Academic Advising and Support
4. Assist with course registration and scheduling, ensuring they align with IB academic standards and student interests.
5. Collaborate on the development of the master schedule to optimize course offerings.
6. Monitor and support students’ academic progress, advising on strategies for improvement when needed.
Counseling and Intervention
7. Provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and support to address students’ social and emotional needs.
8. Facilitate smooth transitions for students, including onboarding new students and helping current students navigate changes.
9. Conduct peer support programs and group workshops on various student development topics.
Student Records and Reporting
10. Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
11. Track student progress through reports and online systems, identifying students who require additional academic or emotional support.
Collaboration and Communication
12. Participate in Student Support Team meetings and coordinate with administration and faculty to create and implement intervention plans.
13. Lead workshops for parents and teachers focusing on mental health, wellness, and strategies to support students’ academic and social growth.
14. Engage in regular communication with students, parents, and school staff to provide updates and collaborate on student needs.
Standardized Testing and School Programs
15. Assist in organizing and administering standardized testing, ensuring compliance with school and IB guidelines.
16. Support orientation programs for incoming students and their parents to facilitate a positive school transition.
17. Contribute to school-wide initiatives and programs that foster a supportive and positive school culture.
Additional Duties
- Supervise at least one after-school sport, club, or activity.
- Chaperone one after-school event (e.g., prom, school socials).
- Assist with school day duties, such as break and lunchtime supervision.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
- Counselor diploma, certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 3 years Counseling experience, preferably in an IB International School setting.
- Strong background in social-emotional learning programs and supporting diverse student populations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with students, parents, and staff.
- Knowledge of IB standards and practices, with a commitment to inquiry-based, student-centered learning.
