Middle and High School Spanish Teacher

Reports To: Middle/High School Principal
Primary Functions
- Provide leadership and organization for the Spanish Language Acquisition instructional program within the Middle and High School.
- Foster critical thinking, cultural understanding, and global awareness through inquiry-based teaching.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure high standards in teaching and learning aligned with the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP).
Duties & Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development and Delivery
1. Design and deliver engaging, inquiry-based lessons aligned with the IB MYP and DP frameworks for Spanish.
2. Integrate interdisciplinary themes and real-world connections to enhance student understanding and engagement.
3. Incorporate diverse cultural perspectives, traditions, and histories into the curriculum to enrich learning experiences.
Planning and Coordination
4. Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to support interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
5. Develop lesson plans and resources that cater to diverse learners, promoting equity and inclusivity.
6. Assist in organizing school-wide events or activities that celebrate cultural diversity and linguistic heritage.
Assessment and Feedback
7. Use formative and summative assessments aligned with MYP and DP criteria to evaluate student progress.
8. Maintain accurate records of student performance and provide timely feedback to students, parents, and school leadership.
9. Participate in parent-teacher conferences and prepare detailed progress reports as required.
Resource Management
10. Maintain and organize resources, including teaching materials, authentic texts, and multimedia content, to support effective instruction.
11. Collaborate with school leadership to secure funding for additional resources and interdisciplinary projects.
Professional Development and Collaboration
12. Lead or participate in professional development sessions to enhance understanding of IB frameworks and best practices for language acquisition.
13. Attend and contribute to MYP/DP team meetings, grade-level planning sessions, and professional learning communities.
14. Pursue continuous professional growth to stay current with trends in language acquisition, intercultural education, and inquiry-based learning.
Communication and Engagement
15. Ensure timely and effective communication with stakeholders, including parents, staff, and administrators, about curriculum, events, and student progress.
16. Prepare newsletters, presentations, and content for school communication platforms to highlight student achievements and classroom activities.
Cultural Leadership
17. Promote global citizenship by fostering a classroom environment that values cultural diversity, critical inquiry, and intellectual curiosity.
18. Organize and oversee events, guest speaker sessions, and projects related to the study of Spanish language and culture.
Student Support and Safety
19. Create a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports the well-being of all students.
20. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those with varying levels of Spanish proficiency or special educational needs.
Additional Duties
- Supervise at least one after-school sport, club, or activity.
- Chaperone one after-school event (e.g., prom, school socials).
- Assist with school day duties, such as break and lunchtime supervision.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Spanish, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Valid teaching credential/certificate in Spanish.
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in an IB International School setting.
- Experience teaching Spanish in MYP and DP frameworks is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of inquiry-based and conceptual learning strategies.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work in a multicultural, international setting.
