Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced College Counselor to join our dynamic team at Mont’Kiara International School. The College Counselor will guide and support students as they navigate the complex college admissions process. This role involves providing personalized advice, resources, and strategies for students to identify colleges and universities that align with their academic goals, interests, and future aspirations. The ideal candidate will be passionate about education, culturally sensitive, and capable of working with a diverse, international student body.
Responsibilities:
College Admissions Guidance:
Provide one-on-one counseling to students and families regarding college selection, application processes, and preparation.
Assist students in researching and identifying potential colleges and universities based on their academic profile, extracurricular activities, interests, and long-term goals.
Guide students through the college application process, including essay writing, application forms, and interview preparation.
Help students understand standardized testing requirements and strategies (e.g., SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS).
Application Support:
Offer detailed advice on writing personal statements, recommendation letters, and other application components.
Review and provide constructive feedback on college essays and application materials.
Coordinate and facilitate the submission of school transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Help students stay organized and meet deadlines for college applications, interviews, and tests.
Work with students on Scholarship opportunities, applications and acceptances..
Workshops and Events:
Organize and host college information sessions, workshops, and college fairs, including inviting college representatives and alumni.
Present seminars and workshops for students and parents on topics such as choosing a college, financial aid, scholarships, and the admissions process.
Stay up-to-date on trends in higher education, including changes in admission requirements, testing policies, and financial aid options.
Social-Emotional Support in the College Process:
Provide guidance to help students manage the stress, anxiety, and pressures associated with the college admissions process.
Support students in developing resilience, time management, and self-advocacy skills as they transition to higher education.
Collaborate with parents and faculty to ensure students receive the emotional and mental health support needed during this critical period.
Cross-Cultural Sensitivity:
Provide counseling that is culturally sensitive and takes into account the unique challenges faced by international students in the application process.
Educate students on the cultural norms and expectations of universities in different regions (e.g., North America, Europe, Asia, etc.).
Collaborative Teamwork:
Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and other counselors to support students’ academic and personal development.
Foster a positive and supportive environment for students and parents, ensuring they feel confident in the college admissions process.
Monitoring Progress:
Track student progress throughout the application process, providing feedback and encouragement as needed.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student interactions, application statuses, and post-application outcomes.
Other Duties Assigned:
Participate in school events, parent meetings, and other school activities.
Interview and schedule students into their courses.
Assist in course selections for students and scheduling them.
Stay informed about trends in college admissions and share insights with students, families, and colleagues.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field
At least 3-5 years of experience in college counseling, ideally in an international school setting
Strong knowledge of the college admissions process in a variety of countries and regions, including the United States, the UK, Europe, Asia, and beyond
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds
High level of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Experience with student information systems and college admissions platforms (e.g., BridgeU, UCAS, Common App) is a plus
