Early Childhood Homeroom Teacher

Reports To: Elementary School Principal
Primary Functions
- Lead and organize the instructional program for the early childhood homeroom within the Elementary School.
- Foster students’ academic, social, and emotional development through an inquiry-based and play-based approach to learning.
- Collaborate with colleagues to maintain high standards in teaching and learning that align with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).
Duties & Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development and Delivery
1. Plan and deliver engaging, play-based lessons tailored for early childhood learners, aligned with the IB PYP framework and American curriculum standards.
2. Integrate transdisciplinary themes to create meaningful connections between learning and real-world applications.
3. Incorporate hands-on, age-appropriate activities that encourage exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.
4. Differentiate instruction to accommodate the diverse learning needs of students, including those with varying abilities and special educational needs.
Planning and Coordination
5. Collaborate with colleagues, including homeroom and specialist teachers, to integrate the homeroom curriculum across various subject areas.
6. Develop lesson plans and classroom resources that reflect the developmental needs and interests of early childhood learners.
7. Contribute to the planning of school-wide events that enhance the educational experience and promote school community engagement.
Assessment and Feedback
8. Utilize formative and summative assessments, such as observations and student portfolios, to monitor and guide student progress.
9. Maintain accurate records of student development and provide regular, constructive feedback to students and parents.
10. Participate in parent-teacher conferences and provide reports on student progress as needed.
Resource Management
11. Ensure classroom resources are organized, well-maintained, and conducive to a stimulating learning environment.
12. Collaborate with school leadership to propose and secure funding for educational resources that enhance teaching and learning.
Professional Development and Collaboration
13. Lead or participate in professional development sessions to adopt best practices in early childhood education and the IB PYP.
14. Engage in grade-level and school team meetings, professional learning communities, and collaborative initiatives.
15. Commit to continuous professional growth and stay informed about innovative teaching strategies and methodologies specific to early childhood education and the PYP.
Communication and Engagement
16. Maintain clear, open communication with parents, colleagues, and school leadership regarding student progress and classroom activities.
17. Prepare newsletters, presentations, and updates to keep the school community well-informed and engaged.
18. Foster an inclusive and positive classroom environment through respectful and supportive communication with students.
Student Support and Safety
19. Ensure the safety and well-being of students during class, break times, field trips, and other school-related activities.
20. Implement strategies to support social-emotional development, encouraging resilience and positive peer relationships.
Additional Duties
- Supervise at least two after-school sports, clubs, or activities.
- Assist with school day duties, such as break and lunchtime supervision.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, or a related field. A Master’s degree in Education is preferred.
- Teaching diploma, certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience, preferably in an Early Childhood IB PYP setting.
- Experience with the IB PYP curriculum is highly desirable, though candidates with a strong understanding of play-based learning are encouraged to apply.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
