Primary Functions
- Provide leadership and organization for the Spanish language instructional program within the Elementary School.
- Foster cultural appreciation and global understanding through language education.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure high standards in teaching and learning aligned with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).
Duties & Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Delivery
1. Develop and deliver engaging, inquiry-based Spanish lessons aligned with the IB PYP framework.
2. Integrate transdisciplinary themes to provide meaningful, real-world connections for students.
3. Incorporate age-appropriate cultural activities, traditions, and perspectives into language instruction.
Planning and Coordination
4. Collaborate with homeroom and specialist teachers to ensure seamless integration of Spanish language instruction into the broader curriculum.
5. Develop schedules and resources for Spanish lessons that meet the needs of all learners.
6. Assist in planning school-wide cultural events that celebrate Spanish-speaking cultures and languages.
Assessment and Feedback
7. Use formative and summative assessments aligned with ACTFL standards to evaluate student progress.
8. Maintain accurate records of student achievements and provide regular feedback to parents, students, and school leadership.
9. Submit progress reports and participate in parent-teacher conferences as required.
Resource Management
10. Maintain an inventory of Spanish language resources, ensuring materials are relevant, accessible, and engaging.
11. Collaborate with the school leadership team to propose and secure funding for additional resources and cultural programs.
Professional Development and Collaboration
12. Lead or attend professional development sessions for staff to promote understanding of Spanish language and culture.
13. Attend and contribute to PYP team meetings, grade-level meetings, and professional learning communities.
14. Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with best practices in language education and PYP strategies.
Communication and Engagement
15. Ensure timely communication with all stakeholders, including parents, staff, and administrators, regarding curriculum, events, and progress.
16. Prepare newsletters, presentations, and content for school-wide communication platforms to highlight student achievements and cultural activities.
Cultural Leadership
17. Serve as an ambassador for Spanish language and culture, fostering an inclusive environment where students celebrate diversity.
18. Plan and oversee cultural celebrations, guest speaker events, and student showcases related to Spanish-speaking cultures.
Student Support and Safety
19. Ensure the safety and well-being of students during all activities, including field trips, cultural events, and classroom instruction.
20. Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including those with special educational needs or varying levels of language proficiency.
Additional Duties
- Supervise at least two after-school activities, such as a Spanish club, cultural performance group, or language-focused enrichment program.\
- Assist with school-wide responsibilities, including playground or lunch supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Elementary School Principal.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or a related field. A Master’s degree in Education is preferred.
- Teaching diploma, certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience, preferably in an IB PYP setting.
- Fluency in the target language and classroom experience in teaching to young learners.
- Strong commitment to professional growth with innovative, student-centered teaching methods.
- Excellent communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a collaborative mindset.
- Experience with the IB Primary Years Programme or similar inquiry-based curriculum.
- Ability to integrate technology to enhance learning.
