Reports To: Elementary School Principal
 

Primary Functions:

  • Provide leadership and organization for the library program within the Elementary School.
  • Foster a love of reading, research, and inquiry through dynamic library activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure high standards in teaching and learning aligned with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Delivery

1. Develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate library lessons aligned with the IB PYP framework.

2. Integrate literature, research skills, and information literacy with transdisciplinary themes for meaningful, real-world connections.

3. Promote the importance of reading and information literacy through storytelling, reading sessions, and interactive library programs.

 

Planning and Coordination

4. Collaborate with homeroom and specialist teachers to integrate library activities with the broader curriculum.

5. Plan and execute library schedules and activities that cater to diverse student needs.

6. Assist in organizing school-wide events such as book fairs, literacy nights, and author visits.

 

Assessment and Feedback

7. Use formative and summative assessments to evaluate students’ progress in literacy, research skills, and personal growth.

8. Maintain accurate records of student participation and provide regular feedback to students, parents, and school leadership.

9. Participate in parent-teacher conferences to share insights on students’ reading development and academic growth.

 

Resource Management

10. Maintain and organize the library collection to ensure a safe, accessible, and engaging learning environment.

11. Collaborate with school leadership to propose and secure funding for new books, digital resources, and program enhancements.

 

Professional Development and Collaboration

12. Lead or attend professional development sessions for staff on incorporating library resources into daily teaching and learning.

13. Attend and contribute to PYP team meetings, grade-level meetings, and professional learning communities.

14. Stay current with best practices in library science and PYP methodologies through continuous professional development.

 

Communication and Engagement

15. Communicate proactively with stakeholders, including parents, staff, and administrators, about library programs, events, and student progress.

16. Create newsletters, presentations, or updates to highlight student achievements and library activities.

 

Cultural Leadership

17. Foster an inclusive environment where students celebrate diversity and understand the importance of collaboration in learning and library activities.

18. Organize and oversee school events such as guest speaker sessions, author talks, and cultural literacy initiatives.

 

Student Support and Safety

19. Ensure the safety and well-being of students during all library activities and school events.

20. Differentiate instruction to support students with varying literacy levels and needs, ensuring equitable access to resources.

 

Additional Duties

  • Supervise at least two after-school clubs, activities, or enrichment programs.
  • Assist with school-wide responsibilities, including break and lunchtime supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Elementary School Principal.

     

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred. Experience with the Elementary PYP program is also preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience, preferably in an IB International School setting.
  • Proficiency in educational technology and digital library systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse, multicultural environment.
