Reports To: Middle/High School Principal
Primary Functions:
• Provide leadership and organization for the English Language & Literature instructional programs within the Middle and High School.
• Foster critical thinking, cultural understanding, and global awareness through inquiry-based teaching.
• Collaborate with colleagues to ensure high standards in teaching and learning aligned with the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP).
Duties & Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Delivery
1. Design and deliver engaging, inquiry-based lessons aligned with the IB MYP and DP framework for English Language & Literature.
2. Lead class discussions on diverse texts, genres, and global themes to foster critical analysis and appreciation for literature.
3. Prepare students for IB assessments, including Paper 1, Paper 2, Individual Oral, and essays, using comprehensive teaching strategies.
4. Integrate interdisciplinary themes and real-world connections to enhance student understanding and engagement.
5. Incorporate diverse cultural perspectives and literature to enrich the curriculum and learning experiences.
Planning and Coordination
6. Design lesson plans and assessments aligned with the IB curriculum standards.
7. Work collaboratively with colleagues to strengthen cross-curricular connections and interdisciplinary teaching.
8. Adapt instructional strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners, promoting equity and inclusivity.
9. Collaborate with colleagues to develop and share lesson resources and best practices.
Assessment and Feedback
10. Use formative and summative assessments aligned with MYP and DP criteria to evaluate student progress.
11. Provide regular, constructive feedback on student work and maintain accurate records of student performance.
12. Mentor students on their Extended Essays and other projects, offering support and guidance.
13. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, including participating in parent-teacher conferences and preparing detailed progress reports.
Resource Management
14. Maintain and organize teaching resources, including literature, primary source documents, and supplementary materials.
15. Collaborate with school leadership to secure funding for additional educational resources and interdisciplinary projects.
Professional Development and Collaboration
16. Lead or participate in professional development sessions, including IB training, to enhance instructional practices.
17. Engage in collaborative planning with other teachers to share insights and best practices.
18. Stay current with changes in the IB curriculum and new teaching methodologies through ongoing professional growth.
Communication and Engagement
19. Ensure timely and effective communication with stakeholders, including parents, staff, and administrators, regarding curriculum updates, events, and student progress.
20. Prepare content for newsletters, presentations, and school communication platforms to highlight student achievements and classroom activities.
Cultural Leadership
21. Promote global citizenship by fostering a classroom environment that values cultural diversity, intellectual curiosity, and critical inquiry.
22. Organize and oversee events, guest speaker sessions, and projects related to the study of English, literature, and societal themes.
Student Support and Safety
23. Create a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports the well-being and development of all students.
24. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those with special educational needs and varying levels of English proficiency.
Additional Duties
- Supervise at least one after-school sport, club, or activity.
- Chaperone one after-school event (e.g., prom, school socials).
- Assist with school day duties, such as break and lunchtime supervision.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, with a specialization in English is required. A Master’s degree in Education is preferred.
- Teaching diploma, certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience, preferably in an IB DP setting.
- Strong understanding of IB curriculum and assessment methods.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with students of different backgrounds.
