The Role of Nurse/Health Office at M’KIS

The role of the professional nurse/Health Office is to provide:

The school nurse/Health Office is not:

General Protocols for student illness/injuries

Student illness and Injuries:

Students who become ill during the school day should report to the Health Office before contacting parents.
All students are required to sign in on the Health Office Student Sign-in Sheet.
The nurse will then assess the student to determine the best course of action.

Based on the assessment, a decision is made to:

Send the student back to class as no treatment is needed.
Treat the student and send back to class (Parental permission is obtained before giving medication to students.).
Call the parent to take the student home or to clinic.

In extraordinary circumstances:

The decision may be made to take the student directly to a clinic or hospital rather than waiting for the parent to arrive at school.
The student is transported to the clinic by school van or by ambulance.
A school nurse will accompany the student and stay until a parent arrives.
A physician and fully equipped ambulances with trained personnel are just minutes away during the normal school day.

Record Keeping:

Appropriate records are kept.
The classroom teacher and/or counsellor are notified if a student is making frequent visits for no apparent medical reason.
Parents are notified of illness, injuries, etc, as needed by a phone call.
Written information is provided when appropriate/necessary.

Early Dismissal Slips:

Early dismissal slips are issued by the Health Office to those students who go home ill during the school day or have medical appointments.
The slip is to be passed on to the guards at the Security Station when leaving school grounds.

Dispensing of Medications:

Students are not allowed to carry medication on their person/in backpacks while on campus.
All medication is to be dispensed only by the school nurse.
Basic medications, such as Panadol, Ibuprofen, and Strepsils are available in the Health Office.
If a student may need medication during the school day, such as asthma medications or antihistamines for allergies, etc, parents are requested to provide those items to be stored in the Health Office.
These medications are to be labelled with the student’s name, name of the medication, purpose of the medication, and instructions for giving.
